CTWC IBERIA 2024 in Ciudad Real
Fourth Classic Tetris Iberia Live Event
After the success of the event held in Madrid in 2023, Classic Tetris Iberia changed its location again, hoping to repeat the success of previous editions.
It was the first time that a Classic Tetris event was held in Ciudad Real, framed in the comic fair Manchacómic, which was celebrating its eleventh edition. Thanks to the collaboration of the organizers of the fair, we were able to enjoy an incredible space such as the auditorium of the López Villaseñor museum.
In this edition we decided to extend the tournament to two days, in order to enjoy the experience for longer and develop the tournament without rushing, being able to transmit all the bracket matches. Finally we had the whole of Saturday 5th in the morning and afternoon, and Sunday 6th only in the morning, which was enough to be able to compete without hurries.
The tournament started on Saturday morning with some technical problems, which fortunately were solved thanks to a support call from Yobi (Nestrischamps creator) from Singapore. The 8 participants were distributed in two 1-hour qualifying rounds, leaving Hangamaster as the first classified and with no maxouts by anyone.
After a break for lunch and regaining strength, we started with the tournament itself, entering directly to the quarterfinals and broadcasting match by match. In the first of them, Hangamaster beats Salva by 3-0, the same score that Gunter got against F1champion.
On the other side of the bracket, Yelena manages to beat Retrocabeza also by 3-0 and VachetBeasty advances to the semifinals after a thrilling match against Tbricks, with a 3-2 result.
After the pairings for the semifinals were defined, we closed the day enjoying some games at Stranger Bits, the first and only arcade bar in Ciudad Real and proud partner of CTWC Iberia 2024.
After a well-deserved break, we resumed the competition on Sunday morning moving on to the semifinals. This time we decided to broadcast both matches simultaneously to make sure there was enough time to enjoy a long best of 7 games final. It was Gunter vs Yelena and VachetBeasty vs Hangamaster. New technical difficulties prevented us from broadcasting correctly what was one of the highlights of the competition: VachetBeasty lost a game against Hangamaster by only two points.
Hangamaster beat VachetBeasty 3-0 and Gunter claimed the other spot in the final, coming from 2-0 down to beat Yelena 3-2.
Hangamaster and Gunter gave us a thrilling best-of-7 final in which, after several comebacks and points won by a last Tetris before level 29, Gunter came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the first prize by a total of 4-3, perpetuating the tradition of CTWC Iberia face-to-face events in which a player from Spain or Portugal has never won.
The generosity of the people who donated to the prize through our Matcherino and, above all, of the four best classified in the tournament, allowed the prize distribution to be wider and that all participants could, at least, recover the registration fee. This is yet another sign of the generosity and fellowship of the fabulous classic Tetris community, which year after year is growing bigger and bigger. We’ll be back in 2025 with new surprises and renewed enthusiasm – see you next year!
